I have not read the manga, but only seen the anime.. and in the anime Akito is a guy!

I kind of like Akito.. It must be so hard for him to know he is going to die young and he can do nothing about it. He knows how he treats the others are wrong, but he has a lot of anger and frustration he has to let out...
